What's New

On March 31, 2009, Silent Five created and produced an event in New York City to help launch Heifer International’s Pass on the Gift month a global celebration dedicated to ending hunger and poverty.  Fourteen actors in cow suits (and one in a chicken suit) got plenty of attention by carrying picket signs stating, “Pass on the Gift”, and  “Visit Heifer.org in April”, as they danced and chanted their way across Times Square and Central Park, letting passers-by know how they can help create sustainable solutions to hunger and poverty through Heifer International (www.heifer.org).

The day's events were filmed for an upcoming PSA (directed by Silent Five) and documented by hundreds of passer-bys who took photos and video which were posted on Twitter, Facebook and Flickr.  Then, on April 1st, the "cows" (and "chicken") appeared on CBS's The Early Show, reaching an audience of 2.8 million viewers!

On September 23, 2008, Silent Five launched the Hope North Mentor fundraising campaign led by actor Forest Whitaker (www.hopenorth.org ). Forest Whitaker became actively involved after visiting Hope North and meeting its students while filming The Last King of Scotland on location in Uganda.

As part of the launch of the Hope North Mentor campaign, Hope North is featured in GQ magazine’s October issue as one of five selected charities participating in GQ’s Gentlemen’s Fund (www.thegentlemensfund.com ).

In August 2008, Hope North was selected by Clothes Off Our Back (www.clothesoffourback.com ) to be a beneficiary of celebrity auctions through May 2009.

On January 25, 2008, Heifer International received a $42.8 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to expand on its successful work in East Africa. Heifer has been a Silent Five client for seven years, and we extend our heartfelt congratulations.

Donata Mukeshimana, 28, feeds elephant grass to her cow. She and her children became the beneficiaries of an in-calf Friesian from Heifer Rwanda on December 13, 2006. They belong to the Muhazi Women's Dairy and Horticulture Development Project in Nsinda Village in the Kibungo District of Rwanda. The cow maintains an average milk production of 12 liters per day and helps nourish the 7 children under her care (5 biological and 2 genocide/HIV family orphans). The cow has changed her life and others in her village dramatically. "These cows have helped (us) build togetherness, some of us have been orphans, and some widows, but now we are able to put our lives together," she said.
